10/28/04 Update: Sources report that the Dream Projector Institute mentioned in this story has shut its doors and abandoned the business. After a series of anonymous phone calls regarding strange experiments being performed at the institute, police obtained a warrant and entered the building this week. Nobody was inside, and all files had been removed. The only things left were some strange looking pieces of equipment, which police haven't been able to identify. Hope nobody paid them too much money, because it looks like this fly-by-night business has flown.
An independent and slightly eccentric researcher has developed a mysterious device he calls a "Dream Projector" that is said to actually be able to look at and record peoples' dreams. You wear the device on your head while you sleep and it measures and monitors various body functions, especially brain waves. People who have tested the device in experiments say that when their brain waves indicate that they have just had a dream, they were awoken by scientists who told the subjects to write down what they were dreaming about. Without fail, the written descriptions matched exactly what the Dream Projector recorded.
6/29/04 Update: I'm not sure if this is a hoax or not, but someone sent me this link for http://www.dreamprojector.com and it looks like the company mentioned in the legend. I've sent their Information e-mail address a message and I'll update this page if I hear back from them.
7/29/04 Update: I've been getting a lot of mail about Dream Projector this week! I apologize that I haven't been able to respond to everyone individually. Yes, I did just receive an invitation from Dr. Karl Shoemaker to check out the facilities. I really am quite intrigued and have half a mind to go. My work schedule probably won't permit me to take the time off for several months, but I'll keep it in mind as something to try.
